A major construction milestone has been reached at the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital as the project is now at substantial completion. From construction to massive training simulations for more than 12,000 faculty and staff, Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) is preparing to ‘hand' the building over to the medical center to begin changing lives.
The Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is quickly approaching its opening date as it has reached substantial completion, marking a major milestone.
“Substantial completion means the project is essentially finished and ready to be used for its intended purpose, even if there are still several things left to finish,” said Kristin Poldemann, associate vice president of Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) on the most recent episode of the City of Ohio State Podcast.
As highlighted by WBNS, a 30-foot-tall Block O inside the new Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital was lit for the first time, marking a major milestone.
The Block O is the highest on campus, sitting 365 feet above the ground. It weighs nearly three tons and contains about 750 feet of LED lighting.

Construction on the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is more than 95% complete as the large name sign has been installed on the 10th Ave. Garage Walkway.
“Seeing the name sign go up on the bridge was a powerful moment for everyone who has had a hand in this project,” said Ragan Fallang, Facilities Design and Construction executive project manager for the inpatient hospital. “It symbolizes how far we’ve come and how close we are to the finish line on opening this world-class facility.”
The Spring 2025 edition of Ohio State’s Alumni Magazine highlighted 23 buildings on the university’s Columbus campus that were supported in part by Time and Change: The Ohio State Campaign. Capital funds from the campaign helped support the addition of new buildings and modernizing ones that have been used by Buckeyes of the past.
Construction on the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is at 95% complete as crews have already turned over floors 11, 12 and 14 to the fit-up team, in addition to floors one through ten. Floors 15 and 16 are currently being turned over followed by 17 and 18. Once floors are turned over to the fit-up team, they’re cleaned and then equipment and furniture are installed.
Cabling is being installed to the operating rooms (OR) for surgical video integration which will allow medical professionals to utilize audio and video technology during procedures.
