The basement walls of the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital are being waterproofed, and the north and south elevator and stair towers now exceed 110 feet. The center elevator and stair tower, just getting started, will be the tallest of the three towers, eventually reaching 410 feet. Sewer and electrical connections are being made under 12th Avenue at Cannon Drive and will support critical utility infrastructure for the new facility, scheduled to open in early 2026.

In early 2021, Ohio State pulled off a magic trick making a pair of parking garages disappear. The North and South Cannon Garages were demolished as a precursor to the new Inpatient Hospital construction project, but where the materials went tells the whole story.
“We are proud to say that 98% of waste materials from the demolished site were recycled,” said Mark Banta. “This included 85,986,000 pounds of concrete, rebar and galvanized materials.”

Work on the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is progressing with deep foundations being installed along the east edge of the site and basement concrete walls under construction. Excavation for the underground tunnel that will extend from the Inpatient Hospital to 12th Avenue is wrapping up in preparation for concrete pours that will form the tunnel. The Inpatient Hospital is scheduled to open in early 2026.

Demolition of the above ground portion of the North and South Cannon Garages was completed in early March 2021. The new Inpatient Hospital foundation work continues upward, with the first structural deck concrete pour occurring March 4. Construction on the 1.9 million-square-feet hospital began in fall 2020 and is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State.
Healthcare Design Magazine recently featured the Wexner Medical Center's new Inpatient Hospital project. The 1.9 million-square-foot, 26-story inpatient tower is the single-largest construction project in Ohio State's history. The bed tower is slated to open in early 2026.
